Map of Scotland Constructed and Engraved from the Best Authorities by J. Kirkwood & Sons. by SCOTLAND. J. KIRKWOOD & SONS. (Publisher): J. Kirkwood & Sons, Edinburgh & W, Faden, London, 1804. 27in x 22in. Contained in the orig. leather-covered slipcase, with large engraved label, with ownership signature of George Peebles of Findowne, worn on edges. Hand-coloured engraved linen-backed folding map, inset plans of the Shetland and the Orkney Islands, engraved labels on reverse of map showing, mail coaches, table of freights at Leith, etc, table of distances, This map has roads coloured so travellers can follow the routes of Thomas Pennant, Lettice, Campbell and Dr Garnett. There is a label giving details of the tours.
The map also shows the proposed routes of the Caledonian and Maryport Canals, line between the Highlands and Lowlands, and the boundary of the Highland Distillery. Whisky distilleries to the north and west of the line paid less duty than the Lowland ones.
